August Membership Lunch

Senator Usha Reddi

As a member of the Transportation Committee and the ranking member of the Commerce Committee, I will touch on transportation policies with a focus on sustainability and infrastructure improvements for roads, airports, and railways. One of the significant challenges we face across all sectors is workforce development. Legislators are actively exploring various pathways to meet the growing demand for professionals in the engineering and related fields.

Brian McNulty, Operations Project Manager, Tuttle Creek Lake

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps), in partnership with the Kansas Water Office (KWO) operates reservoirs for municipal and industrial water use in accordance with the state’s Public Water Supply Program.  Since being placed into operation in 1962, almost 50% of the normal multipurpose pool volume of Tuttle Creek Lake has been lost to sedimentation.  If this sedimentation trend is not addressed, the demand for this vital resource could exceed available supply within the next 25 years.  The Corps and KWO have partnered to conduct a pilot project starting in 2025 at Tuttle Creek Lake to determine the viability of a proven dredge technic, Water Injection Dredging.  This dredging technology has been used successfully for decades in ports and harbors around the world, but never has been attempted in an inland lake.  The upcoming project will establish techniques for this application, parameters for estimating costs, as well as determining what environmental impact could occur if this technology is determined to be a feasible as a means of extending a reservoir’s lifetime.

These  lunches are where we discuss issues of concern to ACEC of Kansas and the engineering industry.  The ACEC of Kansas Board, as always, is interested in getting feedback from you and your attendance at this event affords that opportunity.

Sincerely,

Scott Heidner
ACEC Kansas Executive Director
